Bude Weekend Friday 4th – Saturday 5th October 2024
The Marhamchurch Scottish Dance Club invited me to teach at their Bude weekend in Cornwall and I was delighted to accept. I followed a list of prestigious teachers over the years of the weekend. It is known as the ‘food’ Bude weekend as Dawn the organizer provides the dancers with lunch, cream teas, dinners and more. This was to be the last weekend as it is becoming more difficult to get large numbers of people. About 70 attended in one hall but in the past there would have been double that number in two halls. For the past 17 years Sandy Nixon has been one of the musicians as there used to be two teachers and two musicians. This year, my class musician was Ken Martlew on the piano. He was great. I taught most of my own dances from ‘The Argentine Collection’ and from ‘In the Sunlight of Nikko and Kamakura’. Those in the class really enjoyed the two classes and dances that I selected. On Friday evening there was a social dance and on Saturday a meal in the Falcon Hotel followed by a Ball with some challenging dances. Both evenings were very much appreciated, and the music was superb. The weather for the weekend was really lovely and I managed to visit a few of the tourist places near Bude and one or two further afield. The Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project were near St Austell and a good one-hour drive from Bude. They are both worthy of visiting. On other days I visited Boscastle, just stunning, Clovelly in Devon and walked the cliff path to Widemouth Bay and took the bus back. On the last Sunday I went to Padstow and Tintagel, way up on the headland. The rain cleared just in time for me to visit. I was lucky to have mainly good weather at all places. The town of Bude itself is a lovely place to explore and has many attractions. One is the outdoor swimming pool when the tide is out. Two dancers from Guernsey did outdoor sea swimming there every day. It is sad that this might have been the last Bude weekend but I’m not sure Dawn and Les are ready to give it up yet. I send thanks to them for their wonderful hospitality.
